The new GRO public search room provides the facility for
the general public and genealogists to search our computerised indexes. WHAT INDEXES ARE HELD BY THE GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE?
(Please Note: Roman Catholic marriages were only registered from 1864 and GRO only hold marriages from 1922. Please refer to the historical records page. HOW DO I MAKE ARRANGEMENTS? We have a limited number of spaces in the public search room, and can only permit one person per terminal. You are advised to book an appointment at least 6 weeks in advance as we cannot guarantee that a place will be available on a particular day if you have not made a prior reservation. This should be taken into consideration especially if you are travelling to Belfast. Please note that children cannot be admitted to the room. TYPE OF SEARCHES AVAILABLE Assisted Search General search of records assisted by members of GRO staff for any period of years and any number of entries. The cost of this service is £26.00 per hour. Index Search Computerised indexes are available for searching at a cost of £12.00 for a total of 6 hours or part thereof. This cost includes 4 verifications of entries by staff, with the option of further verifications at £3.00 each.
