Order Certificates

Ways to apply for a certificate

On-line:

If you have a credit or debit card, a certificate can be ordered on-line by following the links below:

The General Register Office cannot issue a certficate if full details are not supplied when the certificate application is made.  The application must include full name(s), place of event (district or street and town) and date or year of event.

Birth certificatefrom 1864 - present.  District or full address of birth must be supplied.
Birth certificate for adopted childrenfrom 1931 - present
Marriage certificatefrom 1845 for non-Roman Catholic marriages and all marriages from 1864.  Please note that the priority certificate service is not available for marriages registered prior to 1922.
Civil Partnership certificatefrom 2005 - present
Death certificatefrom 1864 - present.  District or full address of death must be supplied.

Reduced cost certificates for applications with reference number or district, book and entry number supplied are not available through the online service.

Please note that for the purposes of detection and prevention of crime, information relating to this application may be passed on to other government or law enforcement agencies.

In Person:

By taking your application form to the General Register Office.  The office is open Monday to Friday 9.30am- 4.00pm (excluding Public, bank and all Northern Ireland government holidays.  PLEASE NOTE: The office opens at 10am on the 1st Tuesday of each month due to staff training).

In addition to the General Register Office, some certificates are available from local District Registration offices:

Birth and death certificates registered on or after 1 January 1997 are available from any District Registration Office in Northern Ireland, no matter where in Northern Ireland the event took place.

Certificates relating to non-Roman Catholic marriages registered from 1846 onwards and all marriages registered from 1864 onwards are available from the District Register Office in which they were registered and from 1 April 2004 marriage certificates may be obtained from any District Registration Office, no matter where in Northern Ireland the marriage took place.  Applications to District Registration Offices must be submitted in person, please contact your local office for details of accepted payment methods.

If you have a Visa, Mastercard or Maestro card you can order by telephoning 101 (if calling from within Northern Ireland) or +44 (0)28 90252000 if calling from outside Northern Ireland. You should have your card with you when you ring as we will require your card number and expiry date.  All certificates ordered by telephone will be sent out by post, they cannot be collected from the General Register Office.
