The registration service in Northern Ireland is in practice a partnership between the Registrar General’s Office – The General Register Office - and the 26 local district councils. District Registrars are based in the council offices and are employees of the local authority but for registration purposes are under the instruction and act under the authority of the Registrar General. District Registrars are responsible for the registration of all life events in Northern Ireland.
