Re-registration of a birth
In certain circumstances a birth that has already been registered may be re-registered.
1. Where a child has been born to an unmarried couple and the father’s name was not recorded when the birth was registered;
- If both the mother and the father want the father’s name to be recorded on the birth entry complete form GRO 12.
- If either the mother and the father do not agree to the inclusion of the father’s details on the child’s birth entry, a Declaration of Paternity issued by a court under Article 31B of the Matrimonial and Family Proceedings (Northern Ireland) Order 1989 is required to amend the birth entry to include the father’s details. Form GRO 12A should also be completed.
2. Where a child has been born to an unmarried couple who have since married – complete form GRO15.
Corrections
Occasionally an error may appear on a certificate e.g. incorrect address / wrong date etc. A correction may be made by means of a marginal note to show the correct details. You should complete the amendment form to notify us of the correction required.
